Star Wars – Classroom Lessons

star wars

So much has already been written about ‘Star Wars’ that little else is left to be said. Except maybe asking why the Jedis are burnt like in the Hindu tradition or how is it that Chewbacca and Han Solo meet (I hear there’s a movie coming up on that soon!) That’s not the reason behind this post though. This is a relationship blog and not a movie one. Plus, I wouldn’t ever dare to analyse something as epic as this one!

I am not fascinated with science fiction movies. They don’t make much sense to me. So I stay away from them. As I have from Star Wars all these years. But now that I know what it is all about, I am floored. This movie series is anything but science fiction. It has layers of human human emotions that is depicted through simple and yet hard-hitting dialogues.

George Lucas, is truly one of the greatest entrepreneurs in this star system. He didn’t just create a fantasy empire using vivid imagination, he didn’t just create a culture, he didn’t just start a new philosophy of ‘May the Force be with you’ – he taught us. He taught us and re-told us of simple human emotions and relationships, of stark realities, of hard hitting truths. He told us about life.

In this post I will just write out about the emotions that I felt existed in the movies together with quotes or scenes. In my own little way, this is a small thank you to the creator of this movie, to the movie itself and to all the characters of the movie. They could be robots, animals, half humans or humans with powers – but they are as real as it can get.

(I will try and avoid spoilers just so that those of you who watch it ever in the future can experience the joy of all the twists that the film has)

1. Love Between A Man and Woman Is UnAVoidable And It Can Drive A Man Crazy

“Attachment is forbidden. Possession is forbidden. Compassion, which I would define as unconditional love, is essential to a Jedi’s life. So you might say, that we are encouraged to love.” – Anakin Skywalker, Attack of the Clones

Young Anakin Skywalker takes a drastic step just so that he can save his waife at childbirth.

2. A Son’s Love For His Mother Is Very Strong

Young Anakin Skywalker slays all the sandmen in anger when he finds out what they did to his mother and when his mother dies.

3. Political Minds At Work Can Cause A Lot Changes

“And that’s how democracy dies. With thunderous applause” – Padme Amidala, Revenge of the Sith

“As you can see, my young apprentice, your friends have failed. Now witness the firepower of this fully ARMED and OPERATIONAL battle station!” – Darth Sidious, Return of the Jedi

“I have come before you to resolve this attack on our sovereignty now. I was not elected to watch my people suffer and die while you discuss this invasion in a committee. If this body is not capable of action, I suggest new leadership is needed.” — Padmé Amidala, The Phantom Menace

“We need a system where the politicians sit down and discuss the problem, agree what’s in the best interests of all the people, and then do it.

That is exactly what we do. The trouble is that people don’t always agree. In fact, they hardly ever do.

Then they should be made to.

By whom? Who’s going to make them?” – Anakin Skywalker and Padmé Amidala, Attack of the Clones

4. The Constant Fight Between The Good And The Evil

“Once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny.” – Master Yoda, The Empire Strikes Back

5. Humour Is Needed In Life

(As the garbage compactor closes in) “One thing’s for sure, we’re all gonna be a lot thinner.” – Han Solo, A New  Hope

“The ability to speak does not make you intelligent.” – Qui-Gon Jinn (to Jar Jar Binks), The Phantom Menace

The Star Wars is not lacking in the humour department. For a droid programmed for etiquette and protocol, C-3PO throws in a lot of humour (even if it’s meant to be taunts for his friends like Chewbacca and R2-D2 who can’t verbalise their emotions). Here we go with my favourites.

“Don’t call me a mindless philosopher, you overweight glob of grease.” – A New Hope

You’ll be malfunctioning within a day, you nearsighted scrap pile.” – A New Hope

“You flea-bitten furball! Only an overgrown mop-head like you would be stupid enough to…” – The Empire Strikes Back

“Don’t worry about Master Luke. I’m sure he’ll be all right. He’s quite clever, you know… for a human being.” – The Empire Strikes Back

6. If There Is Life, Then There Will Be Death

“The fear of loss is a path to the dark side. Death is a natural part of life. Rejoice for those around you who transform into the Force. Mourn them, do not. Miss then, do not. Attachment leads to jealousy. The shadow of greed that is. Train yourself to let go of everything you fear to lose.” – Master Yoda, The Revenge of the Sith

7. Friendship Is Forever

“The biggest problem in the Universe is that nobody helps each other.” – Young Anakin Skywalker, The Phantom Menace

“We have powerful friends. You’re going to regret this.” – Princess Leia, Return of the Jedi.

8. Anger and Fear Need To Be Controlled

“Anger, fear, aggression – the dark side they are. Once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny.” – Master Yoda, Return of the Jedi

“Fear is the path to the Dark Side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to Hate. Hate leads to suffering.” – Master Yoda, The Phantom Menace

9. Courage Can See You Through Great Challenges

“Strike me down and I will become more powerful than you can possibly imagine.” – Obi- Wan Kenobi, A New Hope

“Now, be brave and don’t look back. Don’t look back.”- Shmi Skywalker (to young Anakin), The Phantom Menace

10. Pride Is Useless

“Twice the pride, double the fall.” – Count Dooku, Revenge of the Sith

11. Only Hard Work Pays Off In The End

“In my experience there is no such thing as luck.” – Obi-Wan Kenobi, A New Hope

“Try not. Do—or do not. There is no try.” – Master Yoda, The Empire Strikes Back

“Your focus determines your reality.” – Qui-Gon Jinn, The Phantom Menace

12. Don’t Blindly Trust Anyone

“Your eyes can deceive you; don’t trust them.” –  Obi-Wan Kenobi, A New Hope

“Who’s more foolish? The fool or the fool who follows him? ” – Obi-Wan (tells Han Solo), A New Hope

“Many of the truths that we cling to depend on our point of view.” – Obi-Wan Kenobi, Return of the Jedi

13. Have Faith In Yourself

“I find your lack of faith disturbing.” – Darth Vader, A New Hope

“What does ur heart tell u?” – Shmi Skywalker (to Young Anakin), The Phantom Menace

“Already know you, that which you need.” – Master Yoda, Return of the Jedi

14. Trust Your Teacher

“All mentors have a way of seeing more of our faults than we would like. It’s the only way we grow.” – Padme, Attack of the Clones

Always two there are; no more, no less. A master and an apprentice.” –  Master Yoda, The Phantom Menace

“Always pass on what you have learned.” – master Yoda, Return of the Jedi

15. Nothing is Impossible

“Sir, the possibility of successfully navigating an asteroid field is approximately 3,720 to 1.

Never tell me the odds.– Han Solo to C3PO, The Empire Strikes Back

16. Learn To Let Go

“Let go of your hate.” – Luke Skywalker, Return of the Jedi

17. Believe In The Invisible Energy That Exists And Gives Us Strength

“The Force is what gives a Jedi his power. It’s an energy field created by all living things. It surrounds us and penetrates us. It binds the galaxy together.” – Obi-Wan Kenobi, A New Hope

“The Force can have a strong influence on the weak-minded.” – Obi-Wan Kenobi, A New Hope

“Remember, a Jedi can feel the Force flowing through him.” – Obi-Wan Kenobi, A New Hope

18. No One Can Stop Change

“You can’t stop change any more than you can stop the suns from setting.” – Shmi Skywalker, The Phantom Menace

19. Patience Is Needed

“Patience you must have, my young Padawan.” – Master Yoda, The Empire Strikes Back

20. You Are Your Worst Enemy

Before Luke enters the forbidden tree cave on Dagobah, Yoda tells Luke that all that he will face inside are his inner fears. – A New Hope

21. Be Flexible In Life

“If you’re not with me, then you’re my enemy.

Only a Sith deals in absolutes.” – Anakin and Obi-Wan Kenobi, Revenge of the Sith

All your Star Wars fans out there, please share any other life lessons that I might have missed out on. Let’s add it here. You will get credit for it for sure 🙂 Just don’t forget the quote!
